Home / Regulatory information
As a barrister I am required to publish certain information. It is set out below.
I am registered with and regulated by the Bar Standards Board of England and Wales.
Full name: Michael Richard Salter
Professional title: Barrister
Practising status: Self-employed barrister, practising from 42BR Barristers, 11 Staple Inn, London WC1V 7QH
VAT number: GB 820395736
I hold professional liability insurance provided by the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund Ltd.
I hope you will be happy with the service you receive. If you are not, please tell me, and I will do what I can to put it right.
First, complain to me or to my chambers. 42BR Barristers has a written complaints procedure, set out on the chambers regulatory information page and available on request. It says who will consider your complaint, what they will do, and how long it should take.
If you are still not satisfied, you can ask the Legal Ombudsman to look at it. The Legal Ombudsman is independent and the service is free.

There are time limits. You must refer your complaint to the Legal Ombudsman within six months of receiving my final written response to it, and within one year of the act or omission you are complaining about, or within one year of when you should reasonably have known there was cause to complain. The Ombudsman can extend the one-year limit where it is fair to do so, but is not obliged to.
The Legal Ombudsman publishes data about the decisions it has made, including decisions about barristers. You can see it on the Legal Ombudsman decision data page.
You can check my record, and the record of any barrister, on the Bar Standards Board’s Barristers’ Register.
I accept instructions directly from members of the public under the Public Access scheme, without a solicitor. The Bar Standards Board publishes guidance explaining what that means, what a barrister can and cannot do for you, and what to expect. You can read the Public Access Guidance for Lay Clients on its website.
If you would like that guidance in another format, or a paper copy, email me and I will send it to you.
