Direct access barristers are barristers who are qualified to provide legal advice without the need for a solicitor. This type of service can be a cost-effective and efficient way to obtain legal advice, as direct access barrister costs are typically lower than those of using a solicitor. In this blog post, I will explore the costs associated with using the direct access scheme to and provide some guidance on how to ensure you get the best value for money, and ensure you have clarity as to the direct access barrister costs you are charged.

I have separate short blog posts on the the process of instructing a barrister under the direct access scheme here, and on the advantages of the direct access scheme here and so won't deal with these in this post.

Direct Access Barrister Costs

The fees for a barrister instructed under the Direct Access scheme vary depending on the type of work required and the circumstances of the matter. Generally, direct access barrister costs are lower for straightforward cases such as providing advice or drafting documents, due to the fact that less time has to be spent conducting legal research. Barrister fees for a court hearing may be higher, however, due to additional preparation time required. Your case is unique and the direct access barrister costs will be determined upon having taken into consideration numerous factors including:

- the seniority of the barrister,

- the case documentation, and

- the complexities of the matter as these have increased preparation time as there may be additional research or analysis required.

Also, the urgency of the matter needs to be factored into the cost. The barrister's fees and payment arrangements (see below) should always be discussed in advance between you and your direct access barrister or their clerk.

Commonly used pricing models for Direct Access barristers include fixed fees. Instructing fixed fee barristers for is extremely beneficial when dealing with your direct access barrister costs as you get a clear idea of the total cost of your legal services. Barristers are usually experienced in a specific area of law and have a great deal of knowledge and experience in that particular field, so the number of fixed fee barristers is likely to be high as they may be able to provide a fixed fee quote as they have an indication, from their experience, of how long the work should take. Fixed-fee barristers can provide a cost-effective solution for you when you need legal assistance with a specific issue, as the fixed fee will generally be less expensive than using a solicitor.

A man is seen peeking through a set of closed window blinds, his face partially obscured. He appears to be attempting to get a better view of something outside without being seen. The blinds consist of horizontal slats made of plastic, secured by thin cords.

You should enquire about before instructing them. It is important to be upfront with your barrister as to the work that is required and the papers you

expect them to have to read, any lack of clarity may result in a need to increase preparation time, and there may be a further charge for this as the additional work may be necessary for a proper evaluation of your claim.
